Jen and I finally decided to go ahead and take our little honeymoon at walt disney world. Our friends Antz and Katie will be there at the same time, so we have some friends to hang with.

You thought Rochester weather was unpredictable…

Mom was scheduled to fly in at 11pm Friday night but due to the possibility of 2 or more feet of snow, she got on a much earlier flight that morning. She arrived around 9:30 am and was safely at our house. By this time the heavy, wet snow started and didn’t stop. It couldn’t decide if it wanted to rain or snow, so it did both all day causing slushy road conditions. We didn’t go anywhere.

Saturday had warmed up but still called for contant rain all day. We decided to go on a tour of Hammond’s Candy factory. They make lots of hard candy and candy canes. Anyone in my family would appreciate a candy factory tour. We put on fancy-pants hats and watched the workers roll out candy canes while indulging in free samples. Good thing we had a few freebies because their chocolates were over $22 per pound!

We drove around downtown Denver in the rain so mom could see Investco Stadium where the Broncos play and Coors Field where the Rockies play. Then we mosied up to Boulder for the late evening. The rain let up and we had a chilly walk down Pearl Street where mom purchased some more candy (beacause free samples aren’t enough!). We took a little drive to Nederland so she could see a small mountain town, but we couldn’t see much of the town since it was covered in 3 feet of snow.

Sunday suddenly became sunny so we headed to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. I believe mom said “It is just so beautiful” about a trillion times, give or take one or two. She also took the same picture a trillion times because she just couldn’t get enough of the views. Her highlight was seeing the elk that we had told her about. Oh, and the prarie dogs. She loved those, too.

Monday afternoon we took her to Red Rocks amphitheater to see a cool, natural phenomenom. She was quite impressed with the views, but less impressed with the many steps she had to walk up to use the restroom there. I think that was the first time she realized the altitude can do a number on ya!

From there we went to Roxborough state park where Bob pelted me with snowballs. Mom decided we should ban together and shove Bob in the snow, and I stupidly agreed. When Bob was near me, I shoved him, and somehow I ended up getting more snow in my face. Mom tried to clobber Bob with some snowballs, but Bob grabbed me and used me as a human shield. Mom, your brilliant plan backfired and I had to pay the price. Thanks.

The new car

I was torn between a Subaru and Hyundai Santa Fe so Bob and I test drove both. After we both drove the Santa Fe the manager at the dealership gave us a firm handshake and pulled a classic car salesman move- he said “What can I do to make sure you take this car home today?”. He totally lost us with his cheesiness. We told him we had an appointment to test drive a car at a different dealership and headed to the Subaru dealer in Boulder.

We worked with a lady named Arlene and she wasn’t pushy at all. We told her what we wanted and she let us drive it and we formed our own opinions which she respected.  First we drove an ’08 Forester and were pleased with it but wanted to try an ’08 Outback. Then Arlene told us we could get an ’09 Forester for the same price as the ’08 so we were thrilled. After driving the ’09 Forester we knew we were sold on it. (Not to mention it is candy apple red. I immediately craved a candy apple when I saw it).

This particular dealership let us test drive the cars unsupervised and by ourselves, so Bob took the opportunity to make fast turns on a dirt road to see how it would handle. I started sensing some jealousy that Bob would still be stuck driving a Honda Civic with less power than his wife’s new car.  I got to take the car home that day and on the way home Bob passed me on the expressway… most likely to prove his car could possibly compete with the power my  new car has. It didn’t really mean too much though since I drive like a granny on a Sunday.

I passed my class!

Tonight was the last night of my Wilton cake class.  We actually got to make a pretty cake like you’d find in a grocery store. When I was making the flowers I was apparently holding the frosting tube tip upside-down. The teacher pointed it out to me and I actually liked the look of it, to which the instructor told me Mr. Wilton would be rolling over in his grave if he saw me do it that way.

At the end of class I was given an official certificate for passing the course and my name was written in gold calligraphy. Oooh fancy. It even had a raised Wilton seal. My teacher pointed out it is suitable for framing. I just might mail it to mom to hang on her fridge to show off how proud she is of me.

Don’t look if you’re afraid of Clowns

I made another vanilla layer cake for my class Monday evening and knew we had to make a clown cake. I purchased half a dozen creepy plastic clown heads and went to class ready to make another ugly creation.

First we practiced the roses. Mine actually looked like roses this week! The we learned how to do the boarder on the cake which was pretty easy to do. Then we had to take food coloring and stripe it down the insides of our frosting bags so our clowns would supposedly look airbrushed. I think my teacher confused the word “airbrushed” with “ugly”.

I made blobs look like clowns and stuck their plastic faces on top of my blobs. I was done ahead of the rest of the class so I decided to add lines around the sides of my cake to make it look like a drum. Then I didn’t want my roses to go to waste, so I stuck those on top as well. My teacher came by and said “wow…thats…overdone. Hehe”. It was in the overly-nice and snide way and I could tell she was horrified and ashamed that I was her student.

Bob took the cake to work today. No word yet on if he was made fun of or not.
