Gone Fishin’ Instead of Just a’Wishin’

Bob wanted to go fishing last weekend but neither of us have enough fly fishing knowledge to pack up and go, so we hired a local fishing guide to help us. I had been fishing a few times when I worked for Trout Unlimited but haven’t been fly fishing in over 2 years.

Our guide, Bennett, took us up Flagstaff mountain and parked at a lovely trailhead. He said that 90% of fishermen don’t walk more than 100 feet from their vehicle to fish and the next 90% after that don’t walk more than a mile from their vehicle to fish. The further away from our vehicle we got, the better chance we’d have of catching fish in an area that hadn’t been over-fished.

We hiked a whole mile down hill and the entire time I kept dreading when we’d have to come back and climb up. Alas, we were at South Boulder Creek a while later.

Bob had several bites but only got one hooked. You’d think Bob was the fishing guide. He looks like a pro, but I don’t know of any pro that would hook as many tree branches as he did.

I hadn’t felt any bites and after an hour with no luck I started to wonder what was going on. I told Bennett he could hold the Colorado title of “Fishin’ Magician” if he found me a fish. (My dad holds the title in New York). Five casts later I hooked my first fish of the day!

At the end of the day I caught two trout and Bob caught one. It didn’t even matter how many fish we reeled in because the scenery was beautiful!
