2nd Annual Field Day

A few months ago Darla and I decided to plan a Field Day event at work. We knew it needed good food, and a good amount of ridiculousness. Darla and Whitney came over to my house after work to make cobbler, crisps and pandowdies for Field Day desserts. It was really an excuse to drink wine and chunky watermelon margaritas. Ok, maybe I really am adopted because my mom is the drink-mixing queen. I do not have that gene. Note to self: never serve blended drinks to guests. They should not have to chew their drinks.

After some drinks and a minor mishap involving plunging my kitchen sink while splashing Darla with the dirty sink water, we had some pretty darn good desserts! I got the pizza delivery guy to take a picture of us, then sent him away with a to-go plate of apple crisp.

Darla and I set-up the room for our chili cook-off. We had a southern theme so of course we had beer margaritas. Luckily, Darla was able to mix drinks pretty well, so the beer margaritas tasted very good!

Four folks competed in the chili cook-off. The winner was Terre with a green chicken chili. She won a container of cowplops.

For the actual field day part we started with tater sack races! Wendy and Raquel frequently attend jump-roping classes at the gym so it is no wonder they kicked butt!

We also had 3-legged races, a water balloon toss, and relay race. I love the relay race because it involved wearing a crazy outfit (including a rhinestone cowboy hat), riding a tricycle, and hopscotch.

Overall, it was a good day and a much needed break from work for all of us.

Rugged Pups

Bob and I went camping with Shaun and Shelby last weekend. We went to Buffalo Creek campgrounds which is about an hour and a half away in Pike National Forest. We set up our castle of a tent while the pups enjoyed the fresh air.

IMG_7560

We had a camp fire that night and made chicken with zucchini, squash and peppers. Quite fancy for camping food. Wellesley enjoyed licking our empty beverages. Lush.

IMG_7528

The next day Bob and I made pancakes and bacon for breakfast. This is probably the first time in months that I have seen Bob cook anything. Documented for proof!

IMG_7529

After breakfast we took a nap (there were about 2 naps per day) then went for a walk on a nearby dirt road. We passed the cutest mountain home along the way!

IMG_7539

It was pretty hot out so we let the doggies off their leashes to swim in the stream of cold mountain water. They absolutely love being in the water.

IMG_7549

Normally Wellesley is just a pain in the butt and constantly hyper. He loves sticks and was obsessed with the wood pile for our camp fires. He picked out a good piece for chewing.

IMG_7573

Ooooh perfect! Then it was time for him to shred it into kindling to help start the camp fire. What a good helper!

IMG_7575

He had so much fun chewing sticks and logs all weekend, and we appreciated it when it came time to start the fires.

Laugh Factory

Bob was able to decorate his office and paint it any way he wanted. His choice? Monsters Inc! You’d think this was a bedroom for a 7-year-old boy, but nope. It is for my 28-year-old husband.

We went into the blank office one weekend armed with a light gray, dark gray and orange paint. It took forever to get the painting done, but here is what Bob and I did. Bob was proud of the eyeballs he painted.

IMG_7239

Like the “wall art”? I bought placemats at Target with circles on them and cut them into frames to be cheap art.

IMG_7248

That was the extent of our artistic creativity, so he hired a muralist to come in and paint the Monsters Inc characters.

Back Camera

Suddenly my stark, neutral office with a non-blooming orchid plant seems boring.

Boulder Farmer’s Market

I LOVE Boulder. Every spring-fall they have a farmer’s market on Saturday and the crowds of organic hippies come out by the thousands. There are tons of tents set up with local produce, fresh bread, cheese and other organic foods and drinks.

IMG_7299

There is a park along Boulder Creek near the market where people hang out and eat lunch, do yoga or meditate to bring world peace.

IMG_7307

We happened to bring Wellesley with us on this particular day. (Coda was at the groomer’s getting his hairs cut). He enjoyed wading in the creek with Bob and he met some other dogs from an animal rescue group along the way.

IMG_7305

While Wells was busy playing in the water I went to the market and got some fresh flowers. I love gladiolas! Aren’t they beautiful? They were $.50 per stem.

IMG_7319

I also bought zucchini to make Bob zucchini bread and I got him some peaches as well.

IMG_7302

I love this market becaue all of the local farmers and chocolatiers take such pride in their foods and it is nice to know where my food is coming from. There is a class at the culinary school where the chef takes the class to the farmer’s market and everybody picks out fresh food, then they go back to the school to make meals with it. The class is called “Farm to Fork”. I’d like to take that-perhaps next year.

Details and touch-ups

Last weekend was a weekend of chores. I didn’t care for the stark-white paint in the living room and dining room so I picked out a creamier neutral colour. It wasn’t too much of a change, but I like it much better. It only took 4 gallons of paint!

How are the paint fumes treating you, Bob?

IMG_7492

Here is the new colour.

IMG_7495

I also hated the gold details around the house so I bought new door knobs. Minor changes for a bigger impact. Ugh the doors are still hideous.
